Bozeman boys basketball: Hawks deal Sentinel first loss in sloppy ...
Perhaps Bozeman just needed to see how it was done. ERIK PETERSEN/CHRONICLE Bozeman's Gabe Rucker made the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining to hand Missoula Sentinel its first loss of the season. How an underdog might ground a high-flying favorite with nothing but defense and rebounding. How a team, undersized and stumbling, would find a way to stick around for that last shot.Tough-luck C.M. Russell had done it to Bozeman a week earlier. On Saturday in Bozeman's South Gym, it was the Hawks' turn as they dealt top-ranked Missoula Sentinel its first loss of the season, 36-35.Probably to Bozeman's advantage, it was anything but pretty, a defensive slog that negated Sentinel's up-tempo tendencies. The Spartans entered the game averaging a Class AA-high 77.5 points per game and were outscoring their opponents by 25 a game.
Internet Does Linking to Copyrighted Material Infringe? Warner Says ...
Warner Bros. Records files suit against music search engine, SeeqPod for infringement of copyrighted material Warner Bros. Records announced on Friday that it has filed suit against music streaming search engine, SeeqPod. According to Ars Technica, the media giant claims that the search engine, though it does not host any of its available files, infringes on the copyrighted works of intellectual property owners. SeeqPod defends itself, using the DMCA's "safe harbor" provision to protect it from lawsuits. Under the provision, companies that only link intellectual property, and not host them, are protected from lawsuits. The provision was meant to defend search engines that link to illegal websites, so long as the web service does not hand select certain material that can be linked. Only as long as the service automatically links without specifically selecting the recipients of the material or the material itself, is it protected under the provision.

Forging A Merger -- Or Not
More than two weeks after the Chinalco news broke, markets are still obsessing about the Chinese connection. The latest to weigh in on this subject is Stratfor, which provides strategic intelligence on global business, economic, security and geopolitical affairs. The U.S. intelligence firm says Chinalco would consider bidding for a majority stake in Rio Tinto if another company attempted a takeover. Stratfor claims it has spoken with a source 'close to the Australian government' who says Chinalco will block any competing bid. "Beijing appears set on blocking an attempt by the world's largest mining company, Australia's BHP Billiton, to swallow up Rio Tinto, a move that would create a mining goliath worth nearly $350 billion," Stratfor said in a briefing. "Considering that domestic energy security tops the Chinese government's agenda, it is a given that Beijing is looking to carve out a niche in the world's key resource sectors using state-owned energy companies." It's unclear exactly how much of a stake the Chinalco-Alcoa consortium would be willing to buy and at what price though the highest stake rumored until now has been up to 20 percent.
Vista SP1 still vulnerable to speech recognition ‘analog’ hole
A little more than a year ago, Sebastian Krahmer posted a question on the Dailydave security mailing list whether Vista's speech recognition was exploitable or not via malicious sound files that could be hosted on websites. I was the first to answer his call with some initial skepticism but that turned in to astonishment when I ran some tests that confirmed the vulnerability. Stories ran a few months ago before the finalization of Vista Service Pack 1 that SP1 would close this speech recognition vulnerability but I couldn't get any confirmation or denial from Microsoft after multiple queries. I finally got tired of waiting and decided to test the exploit again with Vista SP1 RTM installed and found that the vulnerability still exists. The test sound file I created managed to wake Vista speech recognition, highlight all the files on my desktop or all my pictures via Windows Explorer, and invoke the shift-delete command which wipes the files without the ability to undelete from the Recycle Bin.
