COLUMN: Universal health care: There are better solutions

There use to be a time when one could afford to make a simple trip to the doctor without using an insurance card. This was before the government decided it was better suited to be in charge of your health care than you were, back in the 1960s with the establishment of Medicaid and Medicare.

The years that followed would bring many tax laws into place, forcing businesses to provide health care options and turning the system into managed care, which, in turn, brought drug companies and lobbyist groups to Washington, throwing millions of dollars into the system for their corporate interests rather than people. This has taken away power from the people and doctors and given it to large corporate interests. Prices continue to increase because when the government or third parties are paying the bills rather than the individual, the hospitals and doctors charge top dollar for their services.

Scout talk: Best small-school prospects

Not all NFL players come from schools like Southern California and Miami. Some come from unlikely places. Here are the best small-school prospects by position.

QB—Joe FlaccoDelaware. He has a chance of being the second quarterback taken after Matt Ryan, and could go in the first round.

RB—Xavier Omon, Northwest Missouri State. He dominated in Division II, becoming the first player in NCAA history to rush for 1,500 yards four times.

YouTube wine guru: A subtle hint of 'Big League Chew'

He's been called the first wine guru of the YouTube era. Yet Gary Vaynerchuk's bigger distinction may be this: He's a wine geek you'd actually enjoy having over for dinner.

Mr. Vaynerchuk, 32, hosts a daily video blog called Wine Library TV (which he has just rechristened the Thunder Show). To call it educational programming might be a stretch at times. More than one commentator has likened it to Wayne's World - with wine instead of guitars. Mr. Vaynerchuk's mission: to make chardonnay drinking safe for what he calls the "college-kid crew," many of whom presumably are too intimidated to stray far from Coors Light and Jägermeister shooters.

A natural in front of the webcam, Mr. Vaynerchuk discusses a new topic each day from Springfield, N.J., where he co-owns a large wine store with his father.

Snow snarls North Texas roads more on its way

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for North Texas Thursday, particularly for areas along and north of Interstate 20. The winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.

"Theres another shot of cold air coming with a powerful upper-level trough right over North Texas," said Jennifer Dunn, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The conditions should persist through Friday morning, Dunn said.

With Fridays daytime high temperature topping out around 40 degrees, those areas that received the heaviest snowfall should see the snow stick around through the day. It could reach the mid-40s in portions of the Metroplex. Cloud cover should clear out Friday afternoon and evening, leading to a freezing Friday night in the mid-20s.
