CHS assistant principal dies in morning wreck

Pritchett broke the news and discussed efforts to meet anticipated counseling needs in a brief meeting with teachers and staff before the start of school. Teachers shared the news of the wreck with students at the start of first period. Social studies teacher and head basketball coach Jeff Cody taught with Findley and described her as a professional who was dedicated to CHS and the students she served."She was a true servant, and that's what made her special," Cody said. "She will be missed."Students also were also shaken by Findley's death. "I think there's a lot of shock," said Student Council President Will Snider. "Nobody expects something like this. She gave us so much support. She was always nice. I never heard a bad word spoken about her among the student body, which is pleasing, considering her role as an assistant principal, which is a tough position."She was always funny and extremely nice to every one of us.

Vaux's swifts may lose their favorite Monroe chimney

Imagine about 5,000 Vaux's swifts circling and circling just before dark. By the time darkness falls, they're ready to settle in for the night, dramatically swirling down into one Monroe chimney.

The chimney works fine for the roosting swifts, who traditionally gathered in hollow old-growth snags. Thousands will meet at traditional stopover locations during spring and fall migration to accumulate fat reserves.

Where once there were countless old-growth snags, most in the Monroe area have been cut down, and the swifts have dropped in numbers. Now the swifts' favorite local chimney, the old, tall brick one at Frank Wagner Junior Elementary School in Monroe, may be torn down for safety reasons.

The smallest swift in North America visits Monroe twice a year, at the end of April and peaking in mid- to late-May; and beginning in mid-August and peaking in mid-September.

Ubuntu backer seeks open-source collaboration

Ubuntu Linux backer Canonical has launched a beta version of its Launchpad service, part of an effort to make open-source programming methods a better match for Microsoft.

Launchpad is a website that provides a foundation for Ubuntu's co-operative programming projects, with features for tracking bugs, managing source code repositories and planning new features. Canonical chief executive Mark Shuttleworth believes broader use could help marshal free and open-source software forces more effectively against Microsoft.

"Microsoft has an efficient core infrastructure that allows developers from one part of the company to connect with a developer on another," Shuttleworth said in an interview after the move last week. "In a free software world, if we want to match that, we have to crank up the level of collaboration."

Launchpad was founded to run the Ubuntu project, but it's now open to other projects.

Merkel to discuss election concerns with Russia

Wilhelm said Merkel wanted to get an impression from her visit of how Russian politics would be run in the future amid uncertainty over how Medvedev and Putin will share out responsibilities.

Merkel is due to hold talks with Putin, hold a joint news conference with him, and then meet separately with Medvedev before returning to Berlin on Saturday evening.

"The usual range of bilateral and international themes - the situation in the Middle East, in Kosovo and in Iran -- will play an important role in both sets of talks," Wilhelm said.

Muslim anger mounts over cartoons, movie

We urge all Muslims around the world to boycott Danish commodities, goods, companies, institutions, organizations and personalities," Al-Bashir told the crowd.

Mr. Bashir's Islamist government has used other perceived insults to the prophet to bolster support for the regime and oppose the acceptance of United Nations peacekeepers in Sudan.

Denmark's foreign aid minister said Thursday she was considering whether Sudan's call could have an impact on aid to Sudan, South Africa's Independent Online reports. Sudan is one of the largest recipients of aid from Denmark.

One Muslim blogger living in Denmark, Helen Latifi, criticized the reaction from the Sudan – because it was such a large aid recipient – in comments published in the Sudan Tribune. Ms.

Romney Says He Will Penalize States With Sanctuary Cities, Driver's ...

ATKINSON, N.H. — Republican Mitt Romney tried to link rivals Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday, suggesting the two share a "sanctuary state of mind" when it comes to illegal immigration.

First in a new TV ad and then on the stump, the former Massachusetts governor accused Clinton, a Democratic senator from New York, of favoring amnesty for the more than 10 million illegal immigrants already in the country. He also criticized Giuliani, a fellow Republican, for encouraging illegal immigration by discouraging their prosecution while he was mayor of New York.

"I think that sanctuary state of mind has to end in this country," Romney said after speaking to voters at a local farmstand. He suggested retracting federal funding for cities that harbor illegal immigrants and for states that provide driver's licenses and in-state tuition rates for their children.

Heat's Riley to leave team to scout lottery picks

The buck stops with me when we won the championship, it stops with me when I have the worst team in the league," he said.

Considering Kansas State forward Michael Beasley and Memphis point guard Derrick Rose stand at the top of the lottery board, the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, which runs March 13-16, and the Conference USA tournament in Memphis, March 12-15, figure to be on Riley's wish list.

"If I can scoot off and see some of these guys, that's what I'm going to do," he said, declining to name the prospects he would scout because of league rules regarding underclassmen.

Guard Dwyane Wade, the team's most recent lottery pick, said he respected the move.

"No question," he said. "It's no secret we're going to have a lot of balls in the lottery this summer.

Hillary Clinton Again Lies about Iraq

Yet suddenly, in January 1998, the Clinton administration decided that it had become an intolerable violation of UN Security Council resolution 687, which called upon Iraq to verify its disarmament, and warned Iraq that the United States - despite the lack of Security Council approval as required - would engage in a sustained bombing campaign against their country if the Iraqis did not allow these inspections of presidential palaces to go ahead. By February, a large-scale U.S. military assault seemed likely. However, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan was able to broker a deal late that month that opened the presidential palaces to UN inspectors, but with an additional diplomatic presence in recognition of the sites' special status.

The disappointment by Clinton administration officials that the bombing campaign would not be able to go ahead as planned was palpable.
