Silverlight update fights back against Adobe's AIR
On Monday, Adobe released the long-awaited AIR download for running Web applications offline, but Microsoft is readying an update to its Silverlight platform that it hopes will keep Web developers in its camp. Microsoft will release the first beta of Silverlight 2 "shortly", said Scott Guthrie, a general manager in Microsoft's developer division in charge of Web development, in his blog on Friday. Next week, the company is hosting its Mix08 Web development and design conference in Las Vegas. Silverlight 2 is a significant upgrade to the existing edition because it's designed to let programmers write rich Internet applications for Windows and Macintosh browsers using Microsoft's popular .Net tools. The area of rich Internet applications is fast becoming one of the most hotly contested among infrastructure software providers.

Plaza cam is back
The Plaza cam is back. Visitors to www.ArcataPlazaCam.com can now see live video of the northwest corner of the town square via a Web-enabled camera perched on the Plaza View Stay balcony at Ninth and H streets, according to a press release. A separate web camera existed on the south side of the Plaza for several years, operated by a Web site design and hosting company. Alex Stillman, an Arcata City Councilwoman, is sponsoring the new camera. It uses her private DSL for Internet access. "I figure it's for fun," she said. Stillman said she decided to put it up after her daughter in the Bay Area said she was checking on road and slope conditions via Web cams to decide whether to go skiing. That conversation reminded Stillman of the old Plaza cam. The new camera will be great to view festivals and to see how busy the plaza is, Stillman said.

Forth Road Bridge hack redirects to smut bazaar
Updated Hackers turned the Forth Road Bridge website into a filth jamboree after breaking into its systems to plant script designed to redirect surfers to a Turkish site hosting malware. According to Scottish security outfit Roundtrip Solutions the website of the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (www.feta.gov.uk), which runs the famous suspension bridge in central Scotland, was hacked in order to serve up pop-up ads for porn sites. Roundtrip used AVG's LinkScanner security tool to determine that hackers were taking advantage of the (old and a little obscure) MDAC-RDS ActiveX exploit to launch an iFrame HTML element taken from a website under the control of hackers. .
