It's still a Big Easy feast
A tiny woman sitting next to us at the bar was well on her way to polishing off both halves along with a bottle of Beck's that was preceded by a cocktail or two. Let's face it, New Orleans is not for teetotalers or strict adherents of a carb-free diet. 'Bar-muda Triangle' After our Bywater hosts had polished off their share of the Domeliese's and Parasol's dividends, they suggested a crawl through some Bywater watering holes that are part of what's known as the "Bar-muda Triangle." I'd never been to either but was immediately struck by their down-home nature, which is a perfect antidote to too much enforced conviviality in the French Quarter. First up was Vaughn's Lounge. The name of the place is spelled out in nickels pressed into the worn stone stoop.
Despite tension, Jason Kidd doesn't forget good times
It didn't end the way either side wanted. What breakup ever does? This fresh start with an old team has yet to inspire the confidence Jason Kidd or the Mavericks sought. Kidd doesn't dwell on such weighty matters. All he knows is that the Mavericks need a win tonight at American Airlines Center. The possibility that win will come against New Jersey is secondary. After all, this isn't the first trip around the NBA block or the first trade for the 34-year-old point guard. "You know, we achieved a lot of great things there," Kidd said of his 6½ seasons with the Nets. "Nobody can take that away. They can say what they want. "You take a team from being trash to being respectable, nothing can change that." The Nets were 26-56 before they acquired Kidd in July 2001.

Schools draw parents into ISAT prep game
Families usually pack the gym at Elgin's Harriet Gifford Elementary School to root for basketball players or applaud young thespians, but one night last week, they saved their cheers for standardized-test questions. As pressure to perform well on tests mounts, schools have used pep rallies and prizes to motivate students. Now, they're also recruiting parents to help prepare kids for the state exams. .
