Page 2: Oliver's Twist
Another high school coach once told me that working a football sideline, for him, was always "a dance with madness." Time and again, in the ebb and flow of tense competition, he felt damaging words for officials and players clog in his throat like thick sludge, held there by the thinnest fabric of conscience. Coaches, of course, are far from alone. Athletic events, from the stands to the scoreboard, routinely include as many vented spleens as splendid victories. When it comes to supporting our kids, whether as coaches or parents, common sense is often the most costly turnover on the stat sheet. As the father of a teenage athlete, the only thing keeping me from going Wacker on a referee from the bleachers, time and again, has been the feel of my wife's gentle hand on my shoulder.
Hart's hoax leaves mark on society
Ever did a quick Yahoo! search for recruiting sites? If so, it probably wasn't so quick after all because they are so many to choose from. Recruiting is no longer reserved for the periods leading up to signing day. It's become a 365-days-a-year business, where some guy sitting behind a keyboard in the middle of nowhere is so obsessed with where the next Johnny Come Lately is bound for that he will do anything - (ITALICS) anything (ITALICS END) - to beat the competition. Message boards and chat rooms eat the latest gossip up. Some of the most viewed stories on the Web last week involved (what else?) recruiting. Sports are no longer about teaching youth the core values, such a sportsmanship and teamwork. The days when they were just about having some fun after school vanished years ago.
Misadventures in Atlanta
I will probably go to a Super Bowl party in Alpharetta. The host added a twist to donate items/money for a great cause, so it's a win-win. As long as the screen is big, I'm happy. Happy Friday everyone!! Permalink | Comments (363) | Post your comment | Categories: Sports .

Tax collection in Cóbano slows to a trickle over new assessments
The soaring values are a product of the soaring values of real estate along the Pacific. The maritime zone is the first 200 meters inland from the mean high tide line. The first 50 meters always remains public land, but municipalities in conjunction with the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo can award lengthy concessions or leases to individuals or corporations to develop tracts within the next 150 meters. The land may be used for hotels, homes or other tourism projects. A property holder who actually tried to pay the taxes on a concession in Cóbano reported that municipal officials seem to be confused by the situation and did not want to accept payment. .
