Will authorized hosting put MySQL on a par with Oracle and DB2?

Although real comparability to Oracle and IBM databases could still be some time away, MySQL's new authorized hosting program might help broaden out the niche for the open source database a lot more quickly.

MySQL AB started developing a new program for hosting partners in early 2007, about a year before Sun announced its $1 billion bid to acquire the open source database vendor, said Rich Nigro, MySQL's service provider business manager. Unveiled earlier this week, the new MySQL Authorized Hosting Partner Program gives managed hosting companies using the top-of-the-line Enterprise edition of the MySQL database an option for 24/7 database support directly from MySQL.

House Holds Bush Confidants in Contempt; Republican Members Walk Out

The Republicans' unflinching brazeness presents a real teaching moment. Knowing they will lose the vote, the Republs in the House boycott the vote. The Administration refuses to enforce. "Politics is war by other means" is their motto. Democracy, rule of law, checks and balances, etc. are just words to garner legitimacy for elite rule.

Boutique hotel shines in Bodrum

Tucked away atop a hill a five-minute drive from Bodrum's center is a modest yet luxurious boutique hotel. Having bucked the declining tourism trend in the area both in 2006 (only the hotel's second season) and early into the summer of 2007, The Butterfly may have struck a business model for accommodation that can withstand any blows to the area's tourism industry a model that makes it stand out from the majority of Bodrum's other hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Bookings have doubled every year since opening, said Patrick Hembrough, joint-owner of The Butterfly. Even more interesting, the hotel has not spent any money on formal advertising. The Butterfly opened in its current form and location about two-and-a-half years ago. In its first season, almost all of their clientele discovered The Butterfly via the hotel's Web site.

Adams bulks up Tour staff with stars

Add a couple of big PGA Tour names to Adams Golf's marquee.

Less than three weeks after signing Q-school graduate Tommy “Two Gloves" Gainey and Brad Elder, the Plano, Texas-based equipment maker has added a pair of top-20 PGA Tour players in Rory Sabbatini and Aaron Baddeley.

Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Sabbatini, a former Nike staff player who is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour and ranked 11th in the world, will wear an Adams hat and carry the company's staff bag while using Idea a3 irons, an Idea Pro hybrid and Insight driver. He finished sixth on the money list last year after posting top-10 finishes in each of the four FedEx Cup playoff events and winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Baddeley, a two-time Tour winner and the 18th-ranked player in the world, was released from his deal with MacGregor in the fall.

Seeking solutions for Sonic gloom

All right, after sifting through another 2,500 e-mails Thursday night and Friday morning, we had to run a sequel to the "Save The Sonics" piece from Thursday. Allow me four points before we turn it over to the readers:

Point No. 1: There's one solution David Stern could facilitate -- you know, assuming he cares at all about not murdering the Sonics in Seattle -- that seems so remarkably logical, it's hard to figure how this couldn't work. The NBA failed in Memphis, and the Grizzlies are currently for sale, right? Well, couldn't Stern broker a sale in which Clay Bennett acquired the Grizzlies at a discount and moved them to Oklahoma City, then sold the Sonics to a group of local buyers? (An article in Friday's Seattle Times says numerous local buyers are lining up.) That wouldn't make everyone happy? We lose one of the weakest NBA cities (Memphis) and gain a city that was routinely selling out Hornets games (Oklahoma City), and if that's not enough, Seattle gets to keep the franchise it has had for 41 seasons.

Who Has What It Takes to Be Commander-in-Chief?

The presumed recipient of highly compartmented briefings profiling our most secret intelligence, Clinton is far too gifted to have misunderstood that we are at a historical tipping point where victory or a particularly bloody and ignominious defeat looms as an equal possibility.

But does she display unblinking courage, telling us which difficult course we should choose and her candid judgment about the consequences for the nation if we do?

While she talks a good game about such verities as caring for wounded soldiers and their families, these are easy touchdowns. More fundamentally, Clinton has tied her presidential ambitions to the defeatist MoveOn.org wing of her party. Any flag officer contemplating the prospect of serving under her command can do so only after recalling the icy contempt with which she sneered that the Senate testimony of Gen.

Terapad Pro

It seems that every week a new content management system (CMS) or blogging platform makes its debut, despite the fact that there's little to differentiate them. You pay a small fee (or nothing at all if you don't mind ads being placed on your site) and they take care of your site's design, installation and hosting. Terapad is continuing the trend, allowing both newcomers and seasoned web developers to get an attractive site live in a matter of minutes. Only Terapad is different -- very different.

Fully-featured WYSIWYG editing, CSS control and layout control gives full control of how your blog/site looks. One-click integration of other features like a forum, static web page, events calendar, image gallery, job board, as well as PayPal-enabled shopping basket -- these distance Terapad from its competitors.

Spain Polarized Before Sunday Vote

Today, the vanquished Popular Party and its leader, Mariano Rajoy, still believe that they were robbed of the election and that the victor, Socialist Workers' Party leader José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is an accidental prime minister who lacks legitimacy. Accidental or not, Zapatero embarked on a four-year program to liberalize divorce, marriage and other social laws, an agenda that deeply divided the country and prompted bitter clashes with the Catholic Church, one of Spain's most powerful institutions.

On Sunday, Spanish voters return to the polls after an acrimonious parliamentary election campaign dominated by those same social issues, disputes over immigration and the flagging Spanish economy, and complaints about the Catholic Church meddling in politics. Zapatero and Rajoy, who launched bitter personal attacks and accused each other of lying during the campaign, are both seeking a verdict from voters on whether the 2004 election was a mistake.
