As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

"These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said.

The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.

Ghosts in the machine

I mean, remember the golden age when sports stories used to not be about business all the time? Still, to continue, Reznor offered nine of his 36 new instrumental tracks for free, and for a mere $5 you can download them all. Five more dollars and you get a hard copy of the album sent to your home in a few months ... and there was even an extra-limited-edition of 2,500 for $300 that sold out a couple days ago. That's $750,000, just like that.

I drove in for the $5 route in the midst of all nin.com's crashing servers, missed my "one chance," fired off an e-mail to the help desk and ended up having to separately torrent the entire album off piratebay.org online, happy that ol' Rez gets a little scratch anyway. Obviously, the system needs some tweaking. But it was the first time I happily paid for, in essence, nothing.

Cis' blog roundup - Friday

Over the course of 2 1/2-plus years of running this blog, I should get some credit for understanding how to run this blog while making it fun. I've tried drafting rules from time to time. But most of those attempts have gone by the way side. The ones Blogmeister Ken posted earlier this week are about as dead-on and simple as it gets:

- No personal attacks or inflammatory posts.
- No copyright violations.
- No libel.
And, if it isn't obvious...
- No porn.

I'd probably put an asterisk behind "or inflammatory posts" because some of you guys are so poisoned toward others that you believe anything they post is "inflammatory." Also, some of you believe that any dissing of your favorite political party or ideology is a personal attack. When all else fails, I fall back on the bottom-line rule here: Dave's blog, Dave's rules.

Will's Web Watch: Tuning in to YouTube

About six months ago an email landed in my inbox from a friend with a link to a video clip. The URL pointed to YouTube.com. I'd not heard of it before then and thought nothing of it, given it seemed just one of many websites out there hosting video clips.

But now just half a year later there can't be many people on the internet - or the planet - who aren't familiar with YouTube. The site was officially launched in December 2005 by Steve Chen and Chad Hurley having started it initially in mid-2005 as a means to share videos between friends. YouTube was intended to do for video what Flickr had done for photography and to provide the web 2.0 generation with a place to post and view user-generated content.

Since then things have sky-rocketed. In July the site served more than one hundred million videos in a single day.

Brighton bans windmills

Brighton council came under fire this week for a sudden decision to ban windmills across the municipality pending a review.

The by-law was passed without prior public discussion and forbids any person to erect, construct or expand a windmill for at least one year.

The unexpected decision comes despite provincial support for increased use of renewable energy and worldwide efforts to promote the technology as part of a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Rob Taylor, president of the local Green Party, said: I think it is a step in the wrong direction.

We are running out of non-renewable fuels and people that are making an effort to use renewable energy sources should be commended not held back, he said.

The by-law is to remain in place pending a wider review of land use.

Florida's FDN Communications Chooses Calix

FDN Communications, a 250,000-line CLEC based in Florida, has selected the Calix C7 multiservice access platform (MSAP) to help transform its network in the face of a changing regulatory environment and accelerating consumer expectations. FDN Communications will initially deploy the Calix C7 in its 170 central office collocations.

Founded in 1998, FDN Communications currently provides a full suite of voice and data services to over 70,000 business and residential customers and has more than 250,000 access lines. In addition, FDN provides web hosting, collocation, and application services throughout its operating footprint in the Southeast US.

Calix said that with UNE-P (unbundled network elementplatform) availability and pricing being changed in line with FCC regulatory modifications, CLECs everywhere are looking for multiservice access platforms that maximize the range of services that can be delivered and provide greater network flexibility.
