E-mail scam threatens hit man's visit

The letter is direct, simple and to the point.

I am very sorry for you , is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you dont comply.

Its an e-mail scam, state authorities say, designed to threaten the recipient into sending money so an unnamed hit man wont pay them a visit.

.

Did I really hear this....

Those sections go to about one third of our audience. We corrected the headline the next day in the Accuracy Watch, on the cover of our Northwest section and read by far more people than the Voices can reach. And we'll correct in the Voice sections Thursday, as per policy. I also apologized to French personally.

The story under the headline, by reporter Mike Prager, was accurate, French said. No problems with that, just the headline.

French talked to me a couple of times last week, at one point even asking me for advice on how he could extricate himself from the ethical morass. I don't advise politicians, explained to him that he'd have to figure that out for himself and offered him a chance to talk to the editorial page folks about a letter or even an op-ed column.

Kessler livid after same-sex legislation hits House floor

But within 24 hours it was yanked off the special, or active, calendar and dispatched to the regular one, essentially killing it for this session. An insider told The Register-Herald that a head count revealed as many as 35 Democrats would have voted against and a like number of Republicans were opposed.Kessler, D-Raleigh, who keeps a huge, well-read Bible on his East Wing office desk, raised the specter of employers forced to hire an HIV-positive job applicant in a sensitive work environment such as a dentists office. But Chairwoman Carrie Webster, D-Kanawha, ruled him out of order and wouldnt let him talk.I want a point of order on you! Kessler shot back, and then Webster slammed down the gavel to silence his line of questioning. My son is a dentist, a livid Kessler said afterward. He hires several hygienists.

Failure Was an Option!

First off, there was what he referred to as the "Rovian School of thought," which says that passing this bill would capture the Hispanic vote for the GOP for decades to come.

But wait--I thought the Senators were doing it because it was viewed as vital within policy circles! Don't disillusion me.

P.S.: RWN's source also explains why all those conservative amendments--the official sticking point in the deliberations--aren't insignificant:

Woomail Wants To Woo You Away from Spam

The recipient gets an e-mail saying, "I only read secure e-mail" and a link that takes the recipient to a reply page on the Woomail server , so that no part of the communication travels through cyberspace.

Putting Users in Control

John Halloran, a Puerto Rico-based precious-metals dealer, created Woomail after struggling with the huge amount of spam his brokers and office staff were dealing with. He said that his goal was to put users in charge of their communications, inbound and outbound.

"The problem was that anyone in the world can send you communication from anywhere, and I can't stop them from sending it to my servers," he said. "If I can get them to come to me by typing in a URL or Woo to Woo message, then I can control communications on my server and so I can prevent fraudulent use." (A "Woo to Woo" message is one in which both parties have Woomail accounts.) Sending a message from within the site cannot be done without a challenge-and-response question, putting the kibosh on automated spammers.

Free agent possibilities abound for Rams

The Rams are about to undergo a massive and much-needed overhaul.

When the free agent marketplace opens Friday, this franchise will be ready to buy. Jay Zygmunt has cleared ample space under the $116 million salary cap.

That's a good thing, too, since this 3-13 team has many holes to fill. A normal NFL team turns over a third of the roster every year, but the change could be more dramatic at Rams Park.

Here are the latest developments:

* Zygmunt managed to fix Leonard Little's cap number, so the team didn't have to trim its only real pass-rushing threat. Little appears to be recovering fully from toe surgery. Rams management believes he has at least one more productive season in him.

This is critical, since the team has so many gaps elsewhere in the lineup.

Hubbard love

However, that didn't prevent Edinburgh University Students' Union (EUSA) stopping Narconon Scotland putting up posters advertising its services. The rationale behind the move was that the union couldn't be sure Narconon was, in the words of EUSA's then vice-president Mark Calder, "independent".

"We carried out research which showed it has strong links with Scientology," Calder said at the time. "We were also concerned that this link was not made explicit so a decision was made to take the posters down."

The audio-visual presentation lasts for well over an hour. I have to say it drags a little, though I do enjoy the film about Venezualean Scientologists Audrey Cabrera and Ruddy Rodriguez. It seems it was only the personal intervention of these indomitable women that prevented the country falling into anarchy during and after the 2002 coup attempt against president Hugo Chavez.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's 'Promoting Healthcare Quality ...

Good relationships with participating hospitals are at the core of PHQ's success," said Mike Ramseier, VP, Health Care Management, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "Working collaboratively, we have been able to achieve improvement in several areas. This means better, safer care for every patient who receives medical care at these institutions. That's something we all can be proud of."

"Anthem and PHQ participating hospitals both win as a result of being a part of the program," said Donna Kusuda, VP Quality and Patient Safety, HCA- HealthONE. "While health care providers strive to do the right thing for their patients, putting new systems and processes in place that can enable providers to deliver safer, higher quality services can be challenging. PHQ helps accelerate the timeline for achieving key patient quality and safety goals."

Real Madrid's 29 seconds of madness could prove costly

When a goal is scored in Spain, as in many a Latin country, the commentators come into their own. "Gooooool!" they shout into the microphone, stretching out the word like a tenor holding onto a top note for as long as breath will allow.

Late on Sunday in the Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, the poor guys had to do it twice in half a minute. No sooner had they exhausted the larynx on a Real Madrid "Gooooool!" that was disallowed than the ball was in the net at the other end, and Getafe had scored the most audacious winner of this or many a year.

February is much too early in a 10-month season to speak of a league being won or lost in half a minute of madness but this will take some beating.

There were 29 seconds between the referee, Arturo Daudén, annulling Madrid's goal for offside and Getafe racing the length of the ground to score.
