Abu Dhabi primed to take lead role at EIBTM exhibition in Spain

The emirate will use the three-day trade show to display the results of initiatives taken to transform its conferences and incentives sector. H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, the ADTA's chairman, said on the eve of the exhibition, that the emirate now had all the components in place to become a leader in the regional incentives and conferences tourism industry. He highlighted the benefits of Abu Dhabi's geographical position, infrastructure, and its outstanding facilities and services and said work was continuing to boost the sector's development by adding further tourism projects and facilities. Sheikh Sultan said an important contributor to efforts to boost the sector had been Abu Dhabi's hosting of the Gulf Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings (GIBTM) in March. This showcased the emirate's superb facilities and infrastructure and confirmed its readiness and ability to host even the biggest trade events.

Six years later, how has Hezbollah used and manipulated the media?

His introductory remarks, reminiscent of an Oscar acceptance speech, offered profuse thanks to the media for its wartime efforts in aiding Hezbollah:

In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate.

First of all and in the name of the resistance I would like to thank you as well as the television management and all workers, journalists, and media men in this establishment for the large efforts you made during the war. You, just like other institutions — to be fair to all — were our voice and the voice of the resistance men and steadfast people who want glory, dignity, and loftiness for this country. Of course, any words of thanks to you and all those who acted in solidarity with the resistance in this war fall short of what should be said but they must be said. Thank you.

Ohmigod! Social networkers just can't take it any more!

General Social networking

Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk parses the latest numbers from ComScore on social network activity.

While looking for something that amused me and stopped me from replying to the likeness quiz invitation (and seventy others) from lonely Japanese friends on Facebook, I stumbled upon some numbers from ComScore via Creative Capital.

They seem to suggest that social networking might have suffered something of a peak. Since October, MySpace seems to have lost 3 million unique visitors. And while Facebook's numbers still appear to be going up, they're creeping rather than leaping.

Art, love, and one giant war

Paul Tarrant is living his dream. Thanks to a legacy from his slumlord grandmom, the 20-something from northern England is enrolled at the prestigious Slade School in London, learning to be a "real" artist. Too bad he isn't.

Paul's teacher, the real-life artist and surgeon Henry Tonks, offers him a devastating assessment early on in Life Class, the new novel by award-winning writer Pat Barker: Paul has ability, but nothing to say. He's a technically accomplished void.

To make matters worse, Paul meets Kit Neville, a slightly older artist who has made a name painting the gritty, urban scenes Paul was surrounded by growing up, and which he escaped by painting pretty landscapes. To complicate things further, both men are preoccupied with the same woman, Elinor Brooke, another Slade student.
