IBM explores 67.1m-core computer for running entire internet

We'll hand it to IBM's researchers. They think big - really big. Like holy-crap-what-have-you-done big.

The Register has unearthed a research paper that shows IBM working on a computing system capable "of hosting the entire internet as an application." This mega system relies on a re-tooled version of IBM's Blue Gene supercomputers so loved by the high performance computing crowd. IBM's researchers have proposed tweaking the Blue Gene systems to run today's most popular web applications such as Linux, Apache, MySQL and Ruby on Rails.

International Speedway Corporation Announces Ten-Year Facility Naming ...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- International Speedway Corporation ("ISC"), a leading promoter of motorsports activities, today announced a 10-year, multi-million dollar partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California ("Auto Club"), the nation's largest member of the AAA federation, to re-name California Speedway as Auto Club Speedway of Southern California (the "Speedway"). Specific financial terms were not released.

The partnership will place a premium on enhancing the fan experience at the Auto Club Speedway, with special initiatives aimed at Auto Club members, and a series of capital improvements that will make the racetrack more comfortable, accessible and enjoyable. Detailed plans are still being developed, but as soon as this year, fans can expect to see new escalators, increased shade, additional misting zones, and more interactive fan-friendly elements incorporating new technologies.

New ‘home game’ format lacks playoff feeling

The officials weren't local. I believe one said he was from Augusta. The state game I saw last year at Eastman involved Valdosta Association refs. Dodge's opposition was a team that used the Valdosta Association. Dodge won handily, though, and the officials did a good job.

It's much more convenient to have one site. Some fans are having to travel to two distant locations. Stephens County is going to Carrollton and Cartersville.

Another advantage of eight in two days is the scorebook situation. There's more pressure to find a reliable bookkeeper. The book would neutral for at least six of the eight games. It's not neutral in the current situation. While the vast majority of bookpeople try to do their best, they're still rooting for the home team. A neutral book would negate that and the issue of an opposing book being inept, a pain in the posterior, or both (as a neutral book can legally kick both home and away books off the table).

Iowa farmers hope to sow seeds of agritourism

Dianna and Loren Engelbrecht never thought visitors would travel six or seven hours from Chicago and pay to spend a weekend on their Fredericksburg farm.

They were wrong. Not only do urbanites want to visit their Farmhouse Bed & Breakfast, they wake up at 5 a.m. to perform chores.

Illinois resident Debbie Dewane booked a stay on the farm for herself and her two sons.

Wis. man gets life in wife's poisoning

Mark Jensen trembled slightly as he was told he will never leave prison for suffocating his wife after poisoning her with antifreeze.

"I've come to the conclusion that if I were to impose anything less than the maximum sentence in this case, I'd feel I had cheated the other people because your crime is so enormous, so monstrous, so unspeakably cruel, that it overcomes all other considerations," Judge Bruce Schroeder said Wednesday.

Jensen, 48, was found guilty last week of first-degree intentional homicide, a crime that carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

The judge could have stipulated that Jensen be eligible for parole. Schroeder decided against that option.

Julie Jensen, 40, was found dead in her home in Pleasant Prairie on Dec.

On Native Ground

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration has been blessed with a Congress unwilling to take on the White House and a news media too easily distracted by shiny baubles to do any real reporting.

Messrs. Bush and Cheney certainly hope they'll leave town unscathed. But little by little, the carefully built stone wall that has protected the Administration from prosecution is starting to crumble.

Last week, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan admitted that he made false statements, albeit unintentionally, regarding Mr. Bush's political advisor, Karl Rove, and and Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby's involvement in the Bush Administration's plot to discredit former Ambassador Joseph Wilson.

Wilson, as you may recall, wrote a column in The New York Times in the summer of 2003 that debunked one part of the Administration's bogus case for invading Iraq - that Saddam Hussein was trying to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger.

Facebook snatches ex-Google executive

Founded in February 2004, Facebook has grown rapidly. It now has 34 million visitors a month, according to comScore. It is bringing in $100 million in revenue and has more than 500 employees.

McNamee said the company needs to scale its organization and monetize the site in a way that matches the needs of the community. "Those are very hard things to do and they require very different skills than historically have been the company's strength," McNamee said.

Facebook was harshly criticized for a recent initiative called Beacon that allowed advertisers to exploit the connections between friends. In 2006 Facebook triggered a user revolt when it released a news feed feature that let people track each other's activities on the site.

Sandberg joined Google in 2001 when the search giant was figuring out an advertising strategy that did not detract from the user experience or go against the company's core values of providing search results untainted by commercialism.
